Calder Medusa Hoodie

Calder Medusa Hoodie

This heavyweight 100% cotton brushed fleece hoodie features Calder'sĀ MedusaĀ embroidered on the front panel with contrasting embroidery detail of the wire sculpture. Alexander Calder's sculptures are intended to move and be viewed from different angles- so Rome Pays Off choose to implement this element through slightly offset embroidery in two colors. There is a custom rubberized "Calder" signature label on the bottom rib.Ā

  • 100% Cotton Fleece
  • Unisex, adult size XS to XL, standard fit
  • Made in Portugal
  • Machine wash cold with like colors; Do not bleach; Do not iron design

In the 1920s Calder developed a new method of sculpting: by bending and twisting wire, he essentially ā€œdrewā€ three-dimensional figures in space. In these unprecedented massless sculptures, Calder carved expressive lines out of voids.Ā MedusaĀ depicts Calder’s wife, Louisa James, whom he met on board a ship in June 1929 while traveling to New York from Paris. ā€œOn theĀ De Grasse, when I first met Louisa, she had a lot of fairly short hair and the wind was always up, which is true of any boat, so her hair took the form of snakes and I dubbed her Medusa,ā€ he remembered. As the portrait rotates in suspension, the vibrations of the wire lines and their shadows create a multidimensional aliveness.
