In these unprecedented massless sculptures, Calder carved expressive lines out of voids.Ā Romulus and RemusĀ is one of three large-scale wire works from 1928 incorporating mythological themesāthe other two areĀ Hercules and LionĀ andĀ Spring. After the sculptureās debut in New York, Calder caused a stir by walking down Fifth Avenue with the nearly eleven-foot-long she-wolf under his arm. When asked if he considered it a work of art, he was quoted as saying, āI shouldnāt have made her if I didnāt.ā
