About the artwork: Henri Matisse had been an influence for Tom Wesselmann since first learning about him while studying at Cooper Union (1956ā1959). This influence is seen from his early career in the collageĀ After MatisseĀ from 1959 all the way to his late work, such as in this work from 1996. The iconic image of MatisseāsĀ The DanceĀ is suggested by Wesselmannās fluid blue forms against the colored abstracts shapes surrounding them on a cut-out aluminum backing.
